The Time We Had

I smile when I think of the years past and all the memories we made. Trips to the store for the iced tea that Grandma wanted with lunch - and the bonus MtnDew for you and me.

I remember picking through your old war books afraid you'd catch me and be mad. But you only nodded and pulled another from the shelf. "This one's pretty good, too, Babe."

The hundreds of gun shows and yard sales we went to where we bought little trinkets no one really needs: another tea pot, pocket knife, holster for a gun no one has anymore, or book we may never actually read. Looking back I realize it was never about what we "might find" but it was always about spending time with the ones we love. And time is the one thing we all wish we could get back.

I wish I could feel your arms around me once more, strong and loving, gentle and protective. To hear your voice again, to catch your wink when Grandma wasn't looking. I think about you and I want you back, I want to make more memories and I don't want to miss you anymore.

But I picture you worshipping at Jesus' feet and I can't be sorry to know you're there. I can see you in a perfect painless body, laughing with the saints while you wait for Grandma. If there's ice in Heaven, I bet you already showed 'em a thing or two about skating.

I can't wait to see you again, until then I'll relive old memories and smile for the time we had.

Christmas traditions are spare in my family, the most persistent tradition being that we didn’t celebrate it at all for many years. But recently, various traditions from past years have been reborn. D
