I Hope You Find Your Blessing

My mother and I have a tradition: we text each other every morning, no matter where we are, how many time zones are between us, or how long we’ve been apart. It’s a lovely way to start the day. Recently, she began texting me the phrase “I hope you find your blessing today.” Wow, what a thought! To go through the day actively looking for God’s blessings! It has changed my outlook.
Blessings like a burning sunrise, a warm spring morning, or a steaming cup of herbal tea in my favorite cup come to mind. These ones are easy to spot but are usually relegated to relaxing weekend mornings when I’m already feeling blessed just because I didn’t wake up to my alarm. But in the middle of an eleven-day work week and surrounded by other disgruntled employees, it’s a little harder. And sometimes, just getting that text from my mother at zero-dark-thirty is enough to bless me for the rest of the day.
I once heard a quote on the radio that goes “beauty is not hard to find, but it’s easy to overlook.” I wish I knew who said that, and if they have any more nuggets of wisdom to share. Not hard to find but easy to overlook. Blessings are the same way – they are beauty for the mind and soul.
So, how do we find our blessing for the day? Just like finding a cute jacket at the thrift store, we look for it. Once we start looking for something, we seem to find it everywhere. I remember playing the slug-bug game with my brother as kids and we found Volkswagon Beetles everywhere. Since becoming an adult, I haven’t looked for them much, and would you know, I can’t remember the last time I saw one! But I remember the last blessing I saw. My little blessing just came running inside with four muddy paws and a wagging tail.
Webster defines blessing as “the act or words of one that blesses”; an “encouragement…[or] thing conducive to happiness or welfare.” The archaic meaning of the word “bless” means to protect and to bring prosperity and happiness upon someone. I am reminded of a verse in chapter 6 of the book of Numbers. “The Lord bless thee, and keep thee.”
The Lord sends down his blessings and mercies every morning, I think it would delight Him if we found and appreciated them.
Psalm 103:2 “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:”
What is your blessing for today? Have you given it back to the Lord with praise for His great love?
